Just a short note to say thanks to all those who read and leave comments. Keep them coming – it’s great to hear from you all. I don’t always get time to reply to everyone, but for once it’s not just me being lazy – it’s quite difficult to get to an internet cafe as there are none where I’m living, and often when I’ve travelled down to the main towns, I find the connctions are down in all the cafes. Latest problem is that my computer at home has picked up so many viruses from moving files around on flash drives that I’m now unable to write things at home and then bring them down and upload them. Am trying to find a way f updating my anti-virus software, but it’s not easy with a computer that never gets connected to the internet. Will keep working on it and I’m sure it’ll be sorted soon. In the meantime, things are fine here. Work varies from quite intense, 10 hour days carrying out monitoring visits on schools, to very short and dull days when I turn up at the office and find that everyone else seems to have forgotten to come. As there’s only electricity for 3 hours during the working day, and no internet at the office, it can be difficult to get things done, and I often work on spreadsheets for data collection etc at home in the evenings when the electricity comes back.

Other than work, I fill my time with reading, visiting other volunteers in Kerewan, sitting out with my landlord drinking attaya in the evenings (attaya is a peculiar drink that the men in The Gambia are all addicted to – don’t panic, it’s only very strong china tea made with an incredible amount of sugar and served in tiny glasses) and getting down to the big towns near the coast to visit other volunteers, do my shopping and relax every few weeks.

Will try to upload some more pics when I get the virus problem solved. Look forward to hearing from you all.

  1. Good to hear you are still keeping busy, and we’ll buy the line about the viruses on your pc. Bet you use that one all the time when the work’s not done in the office! 10 hour days eh? Just like being back at VCP Ashill isn’t it? Seriously, it sounds as though you have really settled in there, which is really good to hear. Have a great Christmas – and thanks for the card! Take care, Jackie x

  2. Mr. haynes izzit?
haha! it is! i did not know this “headteacher’s Log” existed until today. Have just sent a card explainingg my communication problems and i go on to explain that i will have the internet before you get it and i rekon i did? anywho, the stately home is livable here and the winter season in england has the advantage of purging the region of its various pests and gnats that may annoy. Indeed we recieved more than a small portion of snow which settled at my doorstep at more than 4″! Hope you are settlin in okay and i would like to visit at some point next year.

    Will be in touch soon

  4. It seems like you’re enjoying yourself which is good to hear. All’s quiet on the Ashill front tho it’s freezing. I’m back after 2.5 weeks off, don’t think they missed me too much tho, Maria filled my shoes admirably. We’re gearing up for Xmas, the post box is getting a refurbishment courtesy of Jo and the PTA are up to their usual tricks – Xmas Fair on Sat, want to man the buzzer stall? Well, better go and get my boy. Take care, Helen x

Hello again, Your antics sound interesting, hope you’re not getting hyper with all that sugar! Don’t take any notice to Cynthia’s comments on the weather, it’s great. Lots of white frosty mornings! All is well here and as previously mentioned the school is in full swing for all the Christmas activities. The ‘do’ is tomorrow night, apparently, Cynthia and Helen have games organised!!! I don’t know if you know but I have a Nature Detectives Club at school now (FS and KS1) and I think they are enjoying it. We are getting into full swing for some bird watching in January. The boys are all doing great and High School is suiting both older ones. Harry even went to watch Romeo and Juliet at the Theatre!

Take care and have a great Christmas.
